John Corigliano

One of the most successful living composers in the United States is celebrating his 60th birthday on February 16th. John Corigliano, whose father was concertmaster at the New York Philharmonic, doesn't need to knock on doors to get commissions. His clients have included the New York Philharmonic, Leonard Bernstein, flutist James Galway, the organizers of the Van Cliburn Piano Competition, and the Metropolitan Opera. He even delivered the soundtrack for a psychological drama entitled "Altered States." John Corigliano's career is not only remarkable because of its versatility, but also because his works are substantial statements about societal issues, as Georg Hirsch reports.
