Yo Yo Ma

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma has become so productive that record collectors have a hard time keeping up. Last year alone, he made ten recordings, ranging from film music to Tango music and traditional classical music. Yo-Yo Ma, who is now 42 years old, started his career as a classical cellist, and he is also starting the new year with a classical recording. He just released six solo suites by Johann Sebastian Bach -- the same pieces that won him a Grammy Award a few years ago. This time, however, there is a little amendment. Those who buy the latest Bach edition entitled "Inspired By Bach" are in for a garden blossoming in accelerated time, the performance of a figure skating pair, and a master class taught by Yo-Yo Ma -- it's all on a home video that can be bought separately from the CD. The question arises whether pictures are needed to distract from technical shortcomings of an overworked entertainer, or whether this Yo-Yo Ma guy is simply a genius. Well, the cellist himself would probably never answer this question directly, but Georg Hirsch was able to get some insightful comments from him.
