Wynton Marsalis

The world has know him as one of the most successful jazz trumpeters of his generation. At 38, Wynton Marsalis has put his mark on the jazz scene, and this not only because of his virtuosic technique. He also composes music that, in its complexity, is reminescent of the later works written by Big Band hero Duke Ellington. Wynton Marsalis, whose brothers Branford, Delfeayo and Jason are themselves accomplished jazz musicians, is constantly extending his turf. Not only his jazz oratorios have made it into major concert halls. Marsalis also tackles classical forms such as the string quartet, ballet music, and symphonic works. Being the artistic director at an organization called "Jazz at Lincoln Center," he regularly receives commissions to write music. The Lincoln Center in New York will be the venue for another one of his breakthroughs at the end of this year. On Decemer 29, his composition "All Rise" is getting its world premiere. The new work incluces the New York Philharmonic, whose music director Kurt Masur will conduct the permformance. A jazz musician reaches out -- Georg Hirsch spoke with Wynton Marsalis and listened to his works.
