Evelyn Glennie

At age 36, Evelyn Glennie is considered the best classical percussionist in the world, and she performs on all five continents. Being rather petite at 5 ft. 3, the Scottish artist is in fact the only classical percussionist who can live on solo performances alone. Glennie has something that others may consider a handicap, as she has been virtually deaf since she became a teenager. Evelyn Glennie, however, does not feel impaired by the loss of her hearing. Her body perceives the sound of her and her colleagues' instruments as vibrations, and that skill is so highly developed that she can even determine the quality of acoustics in a concert hall. She is also an excellent lip reader, and Georg Hirsch had a conversation with the successful percussionist in New York.
