Daniel Heifetz

The music world is celebrating the Centennial of Jascha Heifetz, who was probably the most important violinist of the 20th century. The genius, who died in 1987, lives on in hundreds of recordings, but there is yet another violinist named Heifetz who is alive and well. Daniel Heifetz lives near Washington, D.C., and he has played in all parts of America, in Asia, and in Germany as well. He is a distant cousin of Jascha Heifetz, and his last name has been both a blessing and a curse. When he was 16, his famous namesake granted him an audition. Being constantly compared to the Great Jascha Heifetz, on the other hand, turned out to be an obstacle when Daniel was building his own career. Daniel Heifetz, who is now 52, finally found other ways to build a profile for himself while recruiting new audiences for classical music. Georg Hirsch paid a visit to Daniel Heifetz.
