Some defend their lives, others fight over 100 dollars, and it happens all under the same roof. In a country with a reputation of litigiousness, courts have to deal with the most banal cases as well as with cases of serious murder, which still carries the death penalty in 38 States. Suits involving Muslim terrorist suspects fought in American courts attract the worldwide attention, but private suits in which plaintiffs seek millions of dollars for pain and suffering are no less interesting for the media. Georg Hirsch, a journalist and currently also a law student in America has gathered impressions during his internship at a courthouse in the State of Maryland.
