One Voice Choir

A group of musically inclined Mormons, many of whom have fallen on hard times in their church because of their sexual orientation, are catching public attention: The One Voice Choir, located at Salt Lake City in the state of Utah, welcomes gay and lesbian Mormons who want to sing their praise to the Lord. For them, it may be an alternative of necessity to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, as members of that world-famous chorus have to be considered members of the church "in good standing." In order to have that status, however, members who are homosexual often have only the choice to either remain abstinent, submit to conversion, or accept excommunication. Recently (December 16, 2012), the One Voice Choir had its first public appearance. Since then, it has raised interest far beyond the borders of the Mormon stronghold Utah. Georg Hirsch has the story.
